A Long, Hot Day

Another big service day! Up at 6:00 am, breakfast at 6:30, text & Bible reading at 7:00. Out the door at 8:00. Home for lunch & siesta at 1:00 pm out the door again by 3:00. Finally home for showers and supper at 7:00. Quite the day!

We are seeing more of what the territory is really like now. The first couple of days we were in a more ‘favored’ area, but now we have seen some of the poorer ones. Some that don’t even have locks … nothing to steal!

We had our service arrangement in the open market today. To the tune of wild music in the background, we divided up into groups and said our prayer.

Today Marvin and I did 8 calls in the door to door work and then 2 studies in the morning and 3 studies in the afternoon / evening. Lots of door to door, eh? We were in less favorable territory for the door to door work. I tried a couple of calls but got pretty much the same reaction we get at home. sigh. Marvin had one good call there.

As to the studies …. gold! We had a second study with Ange (if that doesn’t ring a bell, go back a read the rest of the blogs!). He didn’t come to the meeting last night, but he was very apologetic. He just forgot what day it was. We were about 10 minutes late for his study today and he was walking up and down watching for us. The chairs were set and his books were out. A very nice starting study!

Penny and Leslie have a study with a woman named Silvie. She is from Benin (where Marvin & Penny served) and speaks Fon (which they learned). She is a very humble and yet extremely expressive woman. Leslie said that even when she spoke Fon she could often understand what she said, just by her expressions and gestures!

She lives in a very small shop. Yes, the shop. It is like a little corner general store …. only behind bars. What you see in the picture of her shop is about half of the depth. Not too big, eh? She works there, and lives there … with three children under the age of 8 and a sometimes husband. … yeah. Stop complaining about your life!

All in all we had a great day in the ministry! But it was hot. Not the hot of the blazing sun that bites into your head and leaves you weak and dizzy. Mild heat bolstered by humidity that just doesn’t stop. Dripping from every pore. Wet through and through.

Actually, I was prepared for worse from the heat. But … and this is a BIG but … We come home for siesta and after service to a lovely air-conditioned room. If I had to live in the heat 24 hours a day ….. I would not be a happy camper. Let’s just say that two showers a day is going over really well!

On a humorous note: Shopping is interesting in the market. What is this? An Underella?
