Where’s the Beef (been)?
Another hot, humid day. Serious sweat going on. And Marvin kept me going until 7:30 tonight!
I finally got a chance to start a study! We only did 3 doors this morning before heading off to studies. The last door I tried. Two woman answered the door in spite of the fact that I woke them up and they weren’t dressed. When I said we were sharing a thought from the Bible, they went and got dressed and had us in. They got each one their Bibles and were ready to chat.
I did an introduction and then got into the “Would you like to know the truth?” tract. They read the paragraphs and the verses from their Bibles. A very nice call. Marvin & Penny will have to fit it into their schedule somehow.
We have had quite a variety of calls. I have been with Marvin on a study where we sat in a a courtyard of a nice house and had a servant bring us pineapple. Today we studied with a man living in a ‘squatters’ hut, sitting on a very low stool. Basically, this is a very small one room shack with a tin roof. There is a line of these side by side with all the people sitting outside. You have only a curtain for a door so there is no privacy. We sat in the sweltering heat, inside, with one dim light bulb to give us light. The whole room is maybe 6′ X 8′ and the man lives there with his son. But humble people in all circumstances are ready to hear the truth.
Leslie brought little ‘gifts’ to hand out. Among them are ‘rockets’ candies. The little kids are not sure of these at first as they think they are pills. But once they try them … yum! They usually manage to drop them on the ground several times, but that is no deterrent!
Leslie almost fell off a bench today. The woman said “You can’t fall! We don’t have a chicken!” …. apparently the custom where she comes from is that if an adult falls in your home you have to give them a chicken by way of compensation! Penny looked at Leslie and said “Fall! Fall! We want chicken!” Which made everyone laugh.
Today was John & Mandy’s cook day (Leslie will blog more about that later). Mandy made us Roast Beef with Yorkshire pudding! Whooo Hooo! What a treat! It was a thoroughly delightful lunch. For dessert we had another helping of Yorkshire pudding! Can life get any better than that?
Now, in the morning we had been in the market for the service group. There was a butcher shop across the street. Penny pointed out when a taxi arrived with the meat delivery. They unloaded a side of beef from the back of the taxi. This is a hatchback taxi. The side of beef was essentially in the trunk. No wrapping of any kind. Just chucked chuck in the back of the car! It was dragged out and draped over the sweaty shoulder of the hired help and dragged off into the shop. The taxi was now ready to have anything else loaded on top of the juicy mess in the back!
We hope Mandy cooked the beef well. It tasted great, in any case. If you don’t ever hear from us again ……
